You know how it is when you rush home from your day gig, have a nice supper with your wife (or husband), then sit down at your drawing table to draw a comic strip that has to be finished in two hours? You scroll down through the website of you mind about whatever you read or talked about that past week, fix on a image that perhaps you have already drawn in the past (it’s faster that way), and then start your comic with no idea of an ending — just trusting yourself — and two or three glasses of port wine. You get done with the third panel, an idea makes you snicker, and there it is. A punch line. Well, that’s how it happened this time. Let’s hope it happens again.
Order “The Underworld: From Hoboken to Hollywood” the omnibus collection of the very best of the strip’s 23-year run, with annotations, photos, and other surprises from the author (along with a foreword by Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell).
